Big Flavor at Big Star

Now that Spring has sprung in Chicago, it is time to explore the options for eating outdoors! One of the best outdoor patios in Chicago is located on Damen Ave in Wicker Park. Here, just under the L train tracks, sits Big Star, home to some delicious grub and fantastic drinks.

The Vibe

One of my favorite parts of Big Star is their outdoor patio. In the summer months, Chicagoans from all around flock to sit in the sun while sipping excellent cocktails and dining on homemade Mexican fare. People both young, old, hipster, and chic can all be spotted outside, or inside at their large wraparound bar, or a booth. It is not a place you need to dress up for, just come ready to eat and enjoy yourself. The staff is friendly and will work to make sure you have everything you need in a timely manner. Beware, it does get super crowded, so be prepared to wait if you come during peak lunch or dinner hours.

The Food & Drinks

Big Star specializes in homemade Tacos and every kind is delicious. My personal favorite is the Taco de Pescado (fish taco) made with beer battered tilapia, chipotle mayo, cabbage, red onion, lime and cilantro. I bet I had you at ‘beer battered,' right? Another popular taco is the Taco Al Pastor, made with marinated, spit roasted pork shoulder, grilled pineapple, grilled onion, and cilantro. When I say that the pork is tender… it is mouthwateringly tender. ‘Mouthwateringly' may not be a real word, but when it comes to Big Star it is!

If you are there with a group, I highly recommend splitting an order of guacamole to start! The guac here is an incredible color, and the addition of serrano peppers and onions make for an excellent flavor. I also love scooping up the bites with avocado chunks in em… yummy!

Another great taco to try is their Walking Taco. It comes in a bag of Frito chips with spicy pinto bean sauce, salsa, crema, and queso chihuahua all mixed together. If you wanted, you could order it form their new takeout window by their extended patio and walk around Wicker Park with it. Definitely worth a try!

If you bring a group of friends, you must also order a pitcher of their popular margaritas. These margs are dangerously delicious and pair perfectly with their tacos and shared plates.
