When I traveled with my family to Jacmel, Haiti last winter, we stayed at the lovely Cap Lamandou hotel. Located just outside the busy downtown area, down a small and quiet road, this hotel is truly a gem and an excellent place to stay when visiting beautiful Jacmel.
The Room
We booked two rooms for our stay and spread our family of 5 between them. The rooms at Cap Lamandou are comfortable, air conditioned (essential in the Haitian heat), and exceptionally clean. Cap Lamandou has a maid service that will clean your room each day and replenish the two water bottles that are provided.
Each roomed included:
- 2 full size beds
- 1 full size bath
- 1 mini bar/fridge
- A balcony with ocean view
- A TV (channels in both English and French)
- AC Unit with control
- Concierge service
The Views
One of the best parts about Cap Lamandou's location are the spectacular views from the rooms and pool area. From our rooms, we could see the bay below, the mountains rising in the background, as well as the houses dotting the hillside below. The balcony is the perfect place to relax in a chair and catch some rays or read a book. From the pool deck, you can see a small beach below and watch the sun sinking behind the mountains in the evenings.
Hotel Dining and Activities
Straight through the lobby of the hotel is the dining area. It is here that guests are served a complimentary breakfast each morning of toast, fresh fruit and a classic Haitian dish that changed each day. They also serve lunch and dinner for guests and visitors to the hotel.
The menu at Cap Lamanou includes Haitian staples as well as American classics. We dined on so much good food that was prepared by the cooks and essentially ate our way through the whole menu throughout the week. American classics include burgers, sandwiches and fries. And of course there are Haitian dishes with rice, fresh vegetables, and delicious meat. The hotel also has a bar menu, and I enjoyed more than one delicious piña colada during our stay.
During our vacation, the hotel had a promotion for massages. These could be booked at the front desk and enjoyed in the privacy of your own room.
Located adjacent to the dining area is the pool. It is an excellent place to cool off after exploring Jacmel in the heat. Grab a drink at the bar and relax, read a book, or simply soak up the Caribbean sun. I spent many hours enjoying the refreshing pool at Cap Lamandou.
In the evenings on the weekend, the hotel has a band come and play live music on one side of the dining room. They play traditional Haitian music which is the perfect complement to the excellent food and drinks, and setting sun in the background.
For those looking to stay somewhere in Jacmel in a quiet neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle, than Cap Lamandou is the perfect place. It does also have access to a beach which can be reached by stairs from the hotel. This beach is frequented by locals and has a few rocks before a sandy bottom, so bring good shoes. You can also enjoy any of the other beautiful beaches mentioned in 10 Things to Do in Jacmel, Haiti that are a short ride away.
