Having lived in Chicago for three years now, I do not find as many excuses to visit Navy Pier as I once did. Usually the thought of large crowds is enough to deter me from making the trip out. The exception? Navy Pier's IMAX movie theater, which shows new releases as well as documentaries on the biggest screen you've ever seen. When I found a deal for discount tickets to the IMAX, which is known to be on the pricier side, I was super excited to catch a flick.
The Theater
Navy Pier's IMAX is located near the front of the pier right before the food court. At the box office, customers not only buy their tickets, but also pick the exact seats they would like to sit in to watch the movie. Tip: don't pick a seat too close to the front – the screen is incredibly large and best viewed from the middle or toward the back. The seats are soft and big with plenty of leg room. And not to worry about someone too tall sitting in front of you due to adequate height between rows.
The IMAX theater of course offers refreshments for movie-goers. I suggest going with the classic bag of popcorn which customers get to add their own butter too (I love when they do that! All the butter I want? Yes!). Bonus: Free refills on the big tubs of popcorn.
The Experience
Once seated and the movie starts, you are taken on the ride of your life. The theater is expertly and scientifically designed in order to make sure you are immersed in the action from beginning to end. I went to see The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies in 3D and was absolutely blown away by the crystal clear picture. Seeing it in 3D meant that I was not only watching the story unfold, but at times felt like I was a part of it. In addition, the surround sound meant I heard every swipe of the sword and pounding of hooves.
After seeing a movie like this in 3D, I don't know how I will watch an action film any other way. If you are looking to watch a movie how they were meant to be seen, grab this deal for yourself and a friend. You will save a bundle and enjoy every second of the experience. The IMAX features newly released films as well as stunning documentaries and is the perfect date night or a night out with friends.
