Halfway to Italy at Half Italian Grocer

On the Milwaukee strip in Logan Square, across from the Logan Square Theatre, sits a small European style grocer and deli. Inside, you can shop for local and imported items in order to prepare an excellent meal at home, or order one of their amazing sandwiches. Half Italian Grocer is a must for anyone craving a deli with an authentic Italian vibe.

The Vibe

Part of what makes Half Italian Grocer so special is the carefully curated shop attached to the delicious deli. When you walk in, you are instantly transported to a small grocer just like those found in Europe. Take some time to browse the shelves filled with local items, as well as some imported from Europe of course. They have a myriad of sauces, beers, wines, cheeses, and other specialty drinks like European sodas. In the refrigerator section, you can find many of the homemade items available in the deli such as homemade pasta, pizza dough, pesto… everything you would need to prepare an authentic Italian meal at home!

The crowd that frequents Half Italian Grocer is a mix of young and old, families and couples, locals and even out-of-towners. Everyone always appears to be in a good mood, and the staff, who are all incredibly friendly, help to spread the feel good vibe. At the deli, they are always willing to make a special sandwich just the way you like it. My sandwiches get served with a smile and a nice greeting, which makes me feel welcome and leaves me looking forward to the next time I stop by.

The Food

While the grocery part of the store might have the ingredients to cook your own meal, it is almost impossible not to be tempted by the deli at Half Italian Grocer. There, the staff serves up some of the most delicious homemade food I have had the pleasure of tasting. Their sandwiches, most of which are an affordable $6 or $7, are simple yet delightful. Food can be taken to go or ordered to stay. If you do choose to dine there, they have a small seating section with a long communal table as well as individual tables and even a counter to sip on an espresso.

My favorite sandwich is the BLT made on fresh bread and a garlic mayo sauce that is perfect with the crunchy bacon and lettuce and juicy tomato. My boyfriend is partial to the All Italian sandwich, which comes leaded with meat and cheese and is finished with house dressing. For dessert, I always order a chocolate chip cannoli – after all it wouldn't be an Italian meal with out one. And the cannoli's here are so freaking good!

In addition to the sandwich selection, the deli also serves up salads, soups, pasta meals, homemade lasagna (which was voted one of the best in the city), as well as daily specials they have prepared. Thirsty? They make smoothies from scratch and have many coffee drinks that could rival the coffee shop across the street. Anything you order will be good!
