When deciding on dinner, a common debate I have with my boyfriend is whether or not to have asian or mexican food. I am always in the mood for Chinese, and he is always in the mood for Mexican. Always. The debate usually ends when one of us concedes. However, the discovery of a deal for a restaurant that wouldn't force us to decide between the two cuisines seemed almost too good to be true!

The Vibe

The fusion restaurant sponsoring the deal is Si Fu Chinese Latin Kitchen, the result of owners Le Hien and Marc Wuenschel agreeing that people in Chicago (like me and my boyfriend) should not have to decide between Chinese or Mexican food. The restaurant is located in the Roscoe Village neighborhood of Chicago, and features both a dine in and carry out option. Those dining in can sit on stools at at high tables or at long communal tables. The atmosphere is casual, with about half of the customers during our meal eating in, the other half ordering out. The walls are lined with classic Latin items (like sombreros) and Chinese items (like a gong). At each table, a collection of soy sauce, salsa, and chopsticks is available for either preference.

The Food

My boyfriend and I can finally agree: we loved our meal at Si Fu Kitchen! Our deal came with an appetizer to share as well as drinks and two entrees. To start off, we ordered vegetarian egg rolls (a very Asian beginning – haha I win!). The egg rolls were incredibly crispy and the sweet and sour sauce that accompanied them in a word, divine. We devoured them in about 30 seconds.

For my entree, I ordered a stir fry. Each stir fry comes with your choice of protein in both Chinese or Mexican styles, such as orange chicken or carnitas (Mexican pulled pork). I obviously went a more Asian route and got coconut curry chicken to accompany friend rice, Pickled Daikon-Carrots, Cilantro, Cucumber, Jalapeño, and Kimchi. It was delicious! I am a huge fan of curry, and my stir fry did not disappoint.

My boyfriend opted for a Mexican meal and ordered a burrito with Cilantro Lime Rice, Black Beans, Lettuce, Pico De Gallo, and Cheese (although the option was available for an asian style burrito… possibility for the next visit?). He thought it was satisfying, perfectly layered, with a good combination between spicy and fresh.

And Bonus!

Si Fu Kitchen is currently BYOB but does charge a $5 corkage fee. If you are in the mood to bring something of your own, about two blocks West is a boutique wine and spirits shop called Lush. They have a great selection and we picked up a bottle of Spanish wine on our way to Si Fu Kitchen.

For anyone who can never decide between Chinese or Mexican, Si Fu Kitchen is finally a place that features the best of both worlds.
